Servicing your Boiler

If you’ve just had a new boiler fitted, you might not have considered if or when it needs servicing. But like most things, boilers need regular maintenance to ensure everything is running as smoothly and safely as possible

Servicing isn’t just a way to fix immediate problems with your boiler. It’s carried out to prevent serious issues from arising in the future by looking after and maintaining your boiler properly. Your boiler’s performance and efficiency levels could drop over the years, however by having the appliance serviced regularly and replacing worn out parts, it could stay as good as new for longer.

Your boiler needs to be serviced regularly to ensure that no new problems have arisen, such as gas leaks. Every household should have a carbon monoxide alarm so that this issue can be picked up easily. However, without an alarm, carbon monoxide is virtually undetectable. This is one very important reason why your boiler should be serviced regularly by a suitably qualified gas registered engineer.

Boiler Service and their warranty

Most boilers come with a five-year warranty as standard. Some boiler providers may offer up to 10 years’ warranty. However, for the warranty to stay valid for that period, your boiler must be serviced annually.

You should always check with your manufacturer as to their specific terms and conditions, but nearly all manufacturers now state that your boiler must be serviced annually to meet the warranty terms and if it’s not done it will void your warranty.

After a new install your first boiler service must be conducted 12 months after the installation date to meet the terms of your warranty. It should then be serviced every 12 months on an ongoing basis after that.

What is a boiler service?

A gas boiler service is an annual service to your boiler, which is carried out by a qualified gas safe registered engineer. A check is made of its efficiency and safety, and with the owners permission, any appropriate repairs are made to make sure it is running safely and cost-effectively. We recommend you arrange a service every year. A comprehensive boiler service involves dismantling the appliance, cleaning and checking components associated with its safe operation.

What's included in a boiler service?

When we service your boiler, we’ll undertake the following checks:

  • Check all of the major components
  • Check to see the pressure level of the gas is set to a safe and efficient level
  • Check products of combustion from the boiler’s flue are in correct range
  • Clean boiler parts as stated in the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Clean any external system filters
  • Check and repressurise expansion vessels if needed
  • Check efficiency and correct function of the boiler
